veteran calypsonian celebrates 45 years of parang soca
A crazed cackle followed that decisive declaration from veteran calypsonian Crazy (Edwin Ayoung) when he sat with the Express, on Wednesday, for a virtual discussion on parang soca music.
Crazy created the hybrid genre by working with producer/arranger Ancil “Perez” Forde to combine cuatro riffs with soca drums on his parang soca standard “Maria” in 1978. He credits friend and collaborator, the late Clebold Harewood, for giving him the starting lyrics to the song.
Forty-five years later the 79-year-old bard says he is delighted to see the high demand for the music and its practitioners across the region and throughout the Diaspora. Read More
