“There is no place like Trinidad and Tobago, and this is where the mother of all Carnivals lives.”
With those resolute words, National Carnival Commission (NCC) chairman Winston “Gypsy” Peters yesterday declared Trinidad and Tobago open to the world for Carnival 2025.
Gypsy’s optimism was in stark contrast to the overcast skies that kept hundreds away from the annual Carnival curtain-raiser at the Queen’s Park Savannah, Port of Spain.
“In spite of the inclement weather which has dealt us a very, very hard blow, we are happy to see all of you here,” Gypsy said, extending sympathy to those affected by flooding in the country.
Despite the challenging conditions, the NCC chairman shared “good news”, proudly announcing that Carnival 2024 generated US$93 million—which was verified by the Central Statistical Office (CSO).
“With all the figures trending in the right direction, the upward trend in visitorship to our country for Carnival is undeniable,” Gypsy said. “The NCC intervention in Carnival around the world during the year is reaping benefit and for that we are extremely happy.”
A key feature of Carnival 2025 will be the return of the John Cupid Carnival Village, which Gypsy promised would be “bigger and better” in 2025. Positioned as one of the most family-friendly and wholesome experiences of the season, the Carnival Village has become a staple of the festivities.
