Coloniser ships to go: Bill passed to put steelpan on T&T Coat of Arms

The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and the Arts said the National Emblems of Trinidad and Tobago (Regulation) (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which will see the replacement of illustrations representing ships led by explorer Christopher Columbus - the Niña, Pinta and Santa Maria - by the steelpan, the country's national instrument, has been unanimously passed in Parliament.


In an update, the Ministry said the Bill, which was piloted by Minister of Tourism, Culture and the Arts Randall Mitchell, was unanimously passed in the House of Representatives during its 13th Sitting - 5th Session, on January 13, 2025.


The Ministry said:


"This groundbreaking Bill will replace the representation of Columbus’ ships on our Coat of Arms (established in 1962) with our National Treasure - the Steelpan, our official National Musical Instrument.


"This is a proud milestone for Trinidad and Tobago, as we continue to celebrate and promote our rich cultural heritage and identity while making our mark on history."


During his contribution in Parliament yesterday, Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley said this symbol is important to the people of Trinidad and Tobago. Read More
