The Metamorphosis Dance Company will celebrate three decades of dance with “Meta”, on May 4 and 5, at the National Academy for the Performing Arts (NAPA), Port of Spain.
Dance lovers will be treated to eight pieces from noted choreographers including Toronto-based Ronald Taylor, Carol Yip Choy, Bridgette Wilson, Terry Springer and Herrera herself. There will be live music provided by the National Steel Symphony Orchestra, UTT Percussion and double bassist Caitlyn Kamminga.
“The dance styles run the gamut from classical ballet, contemporary Caribbean, kathak and hip hop,” Herrera told the Kitcharee Friday.
Herrera, along with Yip Choy and Christel de Souza, started the dance company in 1994 as an outlet “for passionate dancers who wanted to remain here in T&T and have a platform to study and performance dance here at home”.
The trio was at the time working as dance teachers at the Caribbean School of Dance in the early 1990s. “We realised there was a group of hugely talented dancers who had no outlet for their talent.
