The Trinbago Unified Calypsonians' Organisation (TUCO) wishes to advise the public on the recent judgment rendered on 11th September 2023 by Madam Registrar Narinesingh. In the matter between Morel Peters, commonly known as King Luta, (Claimant) and TUCO (Defendant), Mr. Peters was ordered to pay TUCO costs assessed in the sum of Fifty Thousand and Forty-One Dollars and Fifty Cents ($50,041.50).
This litigation began when Mr. Peters filed an action on behalf of TUCO on 14th December 2021 seeking to challenge the validity of the presidency of Mr. Ainsley King. The claim also sought to render null and void all decisions made by Mr. Ainsley King in his capacity as President. The matter was subsequently dismissed on 30th June 2022 by decision of the Honourable Mr. Justice Ramcharan and Mr. Peters was ordered to pay costs to TUCO, the exact amount of which was to be determined in default of an agreement between the parties. Due to a disagreement on the amount, mainly attributed to Mr. Peters' unreasonable cost position, the court undertook an assessment of the costs, culminating in the aforementioned order.
With this judgment, the matter has officially reached its conclusion. Throughout the legal proceedings, TUCO was ably represented by Mr. Umesh Maharaj and Ms. Nerisa Bala, while Mr. Peters sought representation from Mr. Peter Taylor.
TUCO continues to stand by its values and dedication to serving the Calypsonian community in Trinidad and Tobago. We appreciate the support from our members and well-wishers and are pleased to move forward, focusing on the upliftment and celebration of Calypso music and its heritage.
