The local cruise shipping sector, which has strongly recovered since the COVID-19 pandemic, has up to the middle of June welcomed some 763,000 passengers to the Jamaican shore.
One contributing factor to the boom is a new market consisting of new travellers to Jamaica, which accounted for some 50 per cent of cruise arrivals.
"Overall, there is a new market out there. There's a new travel market that wants to explore. Fifty to 60 per cent of our cruisers now have travelled to Jamaica for the first time. They haven't come for stopover, they haven't done a cruise (here before). They've travelled to Jamaica for the first time!
“So we believe that it's a mix of what the post-COVID traveller looks like and wants to explore, and also some of the work that we have done and continue to do," said Joy Roberts, Executive Director of Jamaica Vacations Limited, the agency in the Ministry of Tourism that is responsible for airlift and cruise.
The rigorous training of travel agents following the pandemic was another factor attributed to the strong recovery which sees performance in the sector currently just below the pre-COVID figures. Read More
